Victor Schreckengost (1906-2008) was an American designer, artist, and teacher who was known for his work in the field of industrial design. He was considered one of the most influential designers of the 20th century and is often referred to as the "father of industrial design."
Schreckengost was born in Ohio and studied at the Cleveland School of Art before going on to teach at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He also studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts in Austria, where he was exposed to the principles of the Wiener Werkstätte, a leading design movement of the early 20th century.
Throughout his career, Schreckengost designed a wide range of products, from bicycles and pottery to furniture and appliances. He was known for his innovative use of materials and his ability to combine form and function in his designs. Some of his most well-known creations include the Jazz Bowl, which won a gold medal at the 1937 Paris Exposition, and the first truck cabs with aerodynamic designs.
In addition to his work as a designer, Schreckengost was also a talented painter, sculptor, and teacher. He influenced countless students and designers throughout his career and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists and designers.
